There are generally three specific types of headphones in use today for audiophiles and professional on-air radio, recording studios, and concert tour audio mixing. These types are labeled closed-back, semi-closed-back, and open-back headphones.
The main difference between the three types is the noise-canceling- effect. Now there is the Bluetooth wireless type of headphones, but we are discussing, for now, the quality of sound being delivered to each ear….
When the time comes to purchase a new set of headphones, one must consider the environmental setting where they will be used. Do you want over-the-head fit headphones or just in-the-ear earphones? If you are in a recording studio listening environment you would want to listen to the isolated details in the recorded sound. That would require the use of a closed-back set of headphones. These have a foam plastic cover between the ear and the headphone elements that dampen the sounds outside the listening ear leaving a quiet music rich sound quality to the listener. Also while using a production audio board at a live music performance, you would use a closed-back headphone set to block out the surrounding screams and general crowd noise of the audience.
Where closed-back blocks out ambient sounds. The semi-open-back and the open-back headphones allow surrounding ambient sounds to filter into your ears joined with the audio sounds within the headset. Which type you choose will definitely depend on the environment that they will be used and the one using them.
If you are an onstage music performer, on the other hand, you would want to use a professional type of in-ear monitor (IEM) earphones that have a low-profile and electronically produced distinctive frequency quality with good separation playback in the ears.
Movement and Travel
When traveling in an auto vehicle or plane, for personal entertainment listening such as games, music, or videos, you would probably do well using a simple inexpensive set of in-ear headphones for your personal entertainment listening such as games, music, or videos, Now if you are an enthusiastic audiophile, you would step-up your listening power with a more expensive pair of earphones, or even a pair of over-the-head headphones. If you do exercise jogging and sports every day while listening to music or podcasts, a normal sports-fit earphone would work best.
Care and Usage Warnings
Here are a couple of things to keep in mind with all inexpensive and expensive headphones. The audio cables going into each earpiece are very fragile to rough handling and could break inside the cord. Try to not pull on the cable from either earpiece or when plugged into their audio connection. When removing the plug from an audio jack, always hold the plug when removing. These headphones are generally not easy to repair, nor can you find anyone to perform the repairs for you.
Brands and Purchasing
Some name brands and models to choose from are AKG MK271MII, Audio Technica ATHM20X, Beyerdynamics DT1770PRO-250, Bose, KOSS PRO4AA, Sony MDR-7506 or Shure SE-215CL, Shure SRH-440, and Sennheiser HD280Pro. There are many other brands you could purchase, all depending on how much you want to spend and again the environment where they will be used. Searching the internet is the easiest way to get started on searching brands. More expensive headphones tend to have better audio quality reproduction, but on the over hand need to be handled with care for long-life durability.
Most all brand computers, laptops, and smartphones require a 3.5mm. A 3.5mm (1/8-inch) with a 6.3mm (1/4-inch) screw adapter is usually factory installed on all headphones purchased today. The headphone cables are generally all 4 feet in length with extension cables available for purchase. There are several manufacturers that make varying lengths of these headphone extension cables. It will just take some online searching to locate a source to purchase from.
Now, you must ask yourself about the choice. How much quality am I willing to forfeit for the price and where am I going to use these headphones (earphones) the most. This will be the determining information for your product satisfaction.
