“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only
? Augustine of Hippo
Ever since I was a child, I was always fascinated by the diversity
and culture of different countries. The more I have travelled, the more I have
found about myself. It has always been my dream to work in an international domain
where I can witness how different cultures combined together can work as one
harmonious team. I have always enjoyed meeting new people and learning from them.
Since my time at school I have always had a knack for chess, football and
cricket. Even though I was the Vice President of my school’s Sports Council and
had the opportunity of being the captain of my team for several games, I equally
enjoyed being a being team member and learnt many leadership qualities from my
team mates as well.
During my time at Manipal University Jaipur, where I studied
Mechatronics Engineering; along with my technical subjects, I also developed an
interest in Marketing, Business Development, Operations and Supply Chain
Logistics. In fact, during my stint as a member of the sponsorship committee of
our university’s Model United Nations conference, I realized the challenges
involved in generating sponsorship and funds to conduct a successful event. It
is during this period that I realized how important building strong connections
and networking is! It was my flair for connecting with people that in the end
enabled me to raise funds of ? 150,000
for my team.
During my subsequent period at college, I read through the
profiles of several successful entrepreneurs and leading business tycoons. It
became very clear to me that a majority of them started their business careers
at an early age. I therefore decided to “take the plunge” into my business
career and start getting hands on experience. After extensive networking and
efforts, I got an opportunity to work as sales trainee with Intertek India Pvt
Ltd., which is a total quality assurance provider to industries worldwide. Working
at Intertek, I understood the intricacies involved in understanding the market –
the requirement of customers, the patience involved in understanding their necessities,
offering them suitable and useful solutions while carefully predicting the
various dynamics influencing the market environment – competition, government
policies, international standards etc. Generating new accounts, maintaining
existing ones and closing important deals within my first few weeks into this
profile gave me a sense of accomplishment like no other and made me realize
what I wanted as a career.
My inspiration for studying international business is twofold.
Firstly, at the age of 22, I have already travelled to over 30 cities in India
and 7 countries. I am able to adapt very quickly to the environment around me
and connect instantly to the ideas, culture and people it has. I believe streamlining
and polishing this ability of mine would help me grow while fulfilling
organizational goals. Secondly, my family is not new to the domain of
international business. While both my parents since childhood, have inculcated
in me a strong sense of values, focus and perseverance; my father himself leads
the International Business team at a one of India’s oldest and renowned public
listed companies and has always taught me that “business is always young”.
I believe that the Global Management Program at the Rotman
School of Management at the University of Toronto would enable me to combine my
technical bent of mind and problem solving attitude with decades of managerial
principles, techniques and experience which are imparted by the very best at the
Global Management program, enabling me to understand a cross-national
environment of business complexity. I aspire to learn a range of techniques for
managing customer relationships, product positioning, new product development,
media planning and marketing communications from this program. The program
would not only accelerate my professional and personal development, but would also
enable me to act as an asset and set new benchmarks for growth at the Rotman
School of Management.
