Requirements

 

“The Network
Team recognize that The University College (UC) prides itself on empowering
students to figure the abilities and know-hows necessary to realize their
academic and trained goals. The Universities’ recent investment in 2 new
academic buildings will enable UC to expand its delivery of world-class
education. To address the technical needs the network team has referred to the UC
strategic plan for 2017 which outlines the following principles for it’s
technology and learning platforms, specifically to “Maximize IT value by
reducing complexity”, by ensuring “Systems must be highly available and
resilient” 1. The
UC network team aims to outline the technical specifications and network
implementation for these 2 buildings, to collectively support 6 offices for
faculty and administration, 1 office and 2 network closets dedicated to the IT
team, 8 classrooms, a library and 3 computer labs. With an installation and
configuration that utilized a variety of wired and wireless technology to
fulfill the universities technology strategic plans. To provide highly
available network access to students, administration and faculty the wireless
network will be implemented

Proposed Topology

 

For the task
of implementing the new network infrastructure for University College (UC), the
network team recommends the implementation of a physical and logical star
topology. This network design will facilitate the network connection for the
faculty and administrative offices, classrooms, a library, and computer labs to
a Local Area Network (LAN) as well as the option to connect to a Wireless Area
Connection (WAN). Figure 1. Shows an example of the proposed star topology. It
illustrates the individual connections made from computers printing devices to
a centralized hub or switch. For the actual implementation to meet current
standards, switches will be used instead of hubs and workstations in this

Justification

Using a
centralized switch that’s in a single place will have the advantage of making
the network easier control and troubleshoot for the network administrators. This
topology choice will also allow the network to be more reliable for the
numerous devices that will use it. Compared to other topologies, this design is
more fault tolerant because if a single connection fails, the rest of the
devices will still be able to function normally. In addition, “the
centralization allows it to simplify fault detection, as each link or device
can be probed individually” (PACE).
This topology is also more scalable for future expansion; a benefit of the star
topology is the ability to easily add more devices to the hubs or switches
without causing a lapse in service. The star topology also has an advantage of
enhanced control for administrators. Hubs and switches use LED’s to provide
port status information and would allow easier troubleshooting for an
administrator with the LED’s to determine proper connection, too many
collisions, or a jabbering network card (PACE). This selection prevents UC college campus
to remain connected and online for the completion of regular academic and
operational activities and fulfills the goals of highly available and resilient
technology services.

Justification

The network
team has kept UC’s strategic plans in mind when selecting devices for the
network design. With security being a priority for the campus, the network team
has recommended the purchase of the Netgear WAC720 ProSAFE Business 2×2 Dual
Band Wireless AC Access Point. The Access Point (AP) includes business class
safety standards that include WPA, WPA2, rogue AP detection and 802.1x with
RADIUS support. On top of safety, the Netgear WAC720 AP operates in both 2.4Ghz
and 5Ghz concurrently for maximum throughput. The Cisco 1921 router was chosen
for its speed allowing 10/100/1000Mbps using RJ45 connectors that will use the
Cat6a wiring to provide gigabit Ethernet connection to connected devices.
Specifications for this network design dictate that for some spaces, large
amounts of connections will need to made to a single switch. To accommodate
multiple connections to devices in the computer labs, classrooms and in the
library, the Cisco Catalyst 2960X 48 port Switch was selected. Having 48 ports
will accommodate the needs for each of the spaces and will also allow for easy
expansion if more devices need to be added. Like the other selected media, this
switch will also allow for Gigabit Ethernet connection. Since the operational
requirements for the server dictate classroom as well as administrator usage,
the network team has selected the Dell PowerEdge R830 four-socket rack server.
This rack server incorporates the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-4600 v4
architecture with a 2U design which makes it ideal for test and development
environments.

 

 

 

 

B.    Cables and Connectors

 

Technical
Requirements

Fast Internet
speeds are imperative for any college campus, and it could be argued they open
the door to higher academic success. Through reliable and fast access to
learning resources that you may not receive using a public or home network. To ensure
connectivity reliability and speed, for this network implementation the Network
team recommends Cat6e shielded twisted pair (STP) cables to achieve the
10GBaseT standard recognized by the 802.3 IEEE Committee, which “provide(s) 10
Gbit/s connections over unshielded or shielded twisted pair cables, over
distances up to 100 meters” (Cozlink). It’s imperative that academic operations
are This recommendation caters to the requirement that are able to connect to

is that they are less susceptible to interference, also know as cross talk, and

Proposed
Cables and Connectors

The proposed cables and connectors for this set up would be to use
Cat6a STP with RJ45 connectors for the wired Local Area Network. The Ethernet
cable manufacturer is Warehouse Cable, Cable, Cat6a 1000ft Stranded shielded
500Mhz 10G, Blue is the exact model type.

 

Justification

The
utilization of Cat6a copper cabling is has been widely recognized as one of the
fastest forms of twisted pair wiring. When implementing Cat6a cables, “network
administrates can build 10Gb network infrastructure confident that they are
investing in technology that has sufficient performance and conforms to specifications
accepted worldwide” cite
Adriaenssens, Luc. The network team understands that reliability and
resiliency is key for the design of this infrastructure and has recommended a
variation on regular Cat6a. The use of shielded twisted pair wiring enhances
the security of the network by reducing cross talk. It’s worth noting that the
network team considered other cables such as fiber optic for use. Fiber optic
has plenty of technical benefits including potentially faster speeds and no
risk of electrical magnetic interference (EMI). However, this comes at a much
higher price per ft of cable. The proposed solution with STP will make
instillation and maintenance easier and cheaper with a reduced likelihood of
cross talk.

 

C.     Networking and Internetworking
Hardware

 

Technical
Requirements

“To ensure regular operations for students, faculty and staff and
even guests, it’s critical to provide a resilient and easily accessible network
infrastructure. The network team understands that there has to be a connection
to n to the network can accommodate 207 computers, 5 servers, numerous printers
as well as to supporting wireless bring-your-own (BYO) devices such as laptops
and mobile phones. To accomplish this task UC’s new building will require multiple
switches to break up the network and filter incoming traffic using MAC
addresses to identify the an individual device that the data needs to transfer
to. The switch will build a library of MAC addresses to     make forwarding decisions. A switch will also be needed to
connect to the WAN controller to the network, enabling the connectivity of
wireless access points creating a WiFi signal for laptops and mobiles. the
building network will also need routers to connect multiple subnets that will
be created for the computer labs, library, offices and classrooms. The router
operates at level 3 and will make it’s forwarding decisions based on the
network address. Implementing these devices will ensure the connectivity for
wired and wireless access for students, faculty and staff. ”

Justification

All devices were chosen with to meet specifications for speed, safety
and resiliency to support UC’s critical tasks of delivering higher education
resources to students. Please see the device justification section below Table
1 for more justification details regarding the routers, switches and wireless
access points.

 

D.    Wide Area Network (WAN)
Design

 

Proposed Wide
Area Network (WAN) Solution

For
the wireless network, we endorse the enactment of the 802.11n standard.
Wireless network connection will be possible for students, faculty and staff
through strategically placed access points on the first and second floor.
Providing this wireless solution will allow connection both in classrooms and
offices but also in hallways when moving between rooms and floors.

 

Justification

The
use of the 802.11n standard has “a marked increase in throughput (from 20 Mbps
to around 200 Mbps, in practice) as well as range of reception (through
reducing signal fading) over the IEEE 802.11a/g standards” (CITE). ”
