Following were suppressed to preserve other people’s

Following two investigative pieces by The New York Times and the New Yorker, Harvey Weinstein has been accused of decades of sexual assault. On top of this several other of hollywood’s biggest names have been accused of sexual misconduct, harassment, and assault. Some include Kevin Spacey, Matt Lauer, and Roy Moore. This year the rise of sexual misconduct allegations have been influenced by the use of social media and the famous people in Hollywood validating these stories. Famous men and women have come out with their own stories who have inspired and empowered non-famous people to have a voice and share their own stories.Recently over 70 women accused Harvey Weinstein of sexually harassing and assaulting them. Immediately, Weinstein was fired from his own company and taken off the air by the Television Academy. Without delay, his wife of 10 years announced she was finally leaving him. In fear, Weinstein denied all these rape allegations against him. After finding out these allegations were in fact true he checked into a treatment center. During the trial it was proven that “Weinstein and his associates paid off the people who he had relations with in order to silence them so his reputation wouldn’t be ruined (Twohey).” It’s important to realize that people care more about themselves and their reputation. It’s surprising but they also let their money and power control them. This causes people to think they can do anything they want and receive no consequences. It must be remembered that years ago in Hollywood “people were suppressed to preserve other people’s reputations and have their own lives destroyed to save someone more famous than them (Twohey).” In the event that this happens the famous person always gets off with no charges filed against them and their name is cleared. It shouldn’t be this way because no matter who it is they should get charged. Not to mention, in Harvy’s case “many of allegations were filed and it caused a chain reaction of people coming out with the truth. These people aren’t scared anymore and that’s why they are speaking their stores and the truth (Twohey).” The more people come out about sexual allegations, the more you have to think and contemplate about how valid or serious these allegations are. Recently, one of the most famous reporters in hollywood was also found guilty of sexual allegations. A famous reporter from The Today show, Matt Lauer, was fired by NBC overnight. This happened after the network received an explicit complaint from a coworker about his inappropriate sexual behavior in the studio. As soon as this happened people became surprised that “even someone who they have been watching for years became part of the sexual harassment and abuse allegations (Rutenberg).” Seeing that this occurred, proves that anyone, famous or not, is capable of committing this serious crime. Frequently, these people use their power to draw people in and they take advantage of others.  After all of this went down “even the president weighed in on these allegations (Rutenberg).” On top of all the other work the president has, he now has blamed NBC News for not catching this sooner   and wants the senior authority of the company to look further into the investigations and bring justice. Sadly, “many people are accused of sexual harassment and there is a lot more on the way (Rutenberg).”  In the long run People with fame and fortune don’t care about their actions until they are outed to the world. These celebrities should be accused and charged because what they are doing isn’t right or fair to their coworkers. In this day and age the use of social media is also helping to bring justice and encourage the victims to step forward and have a voice. As the allegations kept flowing a surprising alligation came out. Among the accused was Kevin Spacey. Actor Anthony Rapp accused him claiming that Spacey made sexual advances toward him when he was only 14 years old. In fact less than a week later eight current and former House of Cards employees accused Spacey of sexually harassing and assaulting them. Heather Unruh, a former Boston TV news anchor, claimed Spacey sexually assaulted her and her 18-year-old son Will Little at a Nantucket bar. She said “I came forward with my story, standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out, to shine a light and hopefully making a difference, as they have done for me (Paulson).” She deserves the right to tell her story and her story should be heard. It’s horrible that this happened to her and Spacey should be charged. After she claimed this “Spacey was horrified at the story and the situation but did not remember it happening (Paulson).” If he claims he doesn’t remember this happening than there are more possiblities that this isn’t the first time he did this. Everybody is on the edge of their seats while more of these allegations are coming out. How much more accusations are there going to be and will it ever end? Are these stories actually true? We may never know the answer to those questions, but what we do know is that the stories and situations are horrifying. Most of the accusations that are coming out are usually from a woman, but one man was actually brave enough to come out and share his story. It was said that “at a time when everyone is coming out about their experiences with sexual assault he (Anthony Rapp) felt empowered enough to share his story too (Paulson).” It’s good that he came out because it shows that not only women are dealing with these issues. As he shares his story people will start to believe what people have to say. With everyone coming out about how they were sexually abused or harassed more people are inspired to come out and tell their stories. Roy Moore, who was running for senate and lost on December 12, 2017, was accused of being a child molester. One woman came forward claiming she was threatened at the time Moore raped her. He told her “no one will believe you” (Martin and Stolberg) as a threat so she wouldn’t speak up for herself and tell. At the time of the attack Moore was a District Attorney and was trying to save his reputation. If she told the authorities he wouldn’t be able to run and he would lose his place in the government. If people with power believe the word of the women abused that can have a big impact on the government and their decisions on who they hire. Several other woman decided to also come forward about their encounters with Moore. The one thing is that Attorney General Jeff Sessions also said he has no reason not to believe the women who Moore allegedly sexually harassed and assaulted. It is a known fact that “being threatened can have an impact on someone and especially in an emotional state of mind (Martin and Stolberg).” Moore threatened the people he abused so they wouldn’t ruin his reputation. Once again another example of people in power using their resources to save themselves. The government also struggled with these allegations a lot too. “They are having a harder time whether to accept a child raper into the government  (Martin and Stolberg).” They are in between a rock and a hard place because the problem is whether to allow a child abuser to help run this country. Some people are conflicted on the issue. Regardless if the allegations are true or not, there are still more and more allegations and accusations being made and the findings have been astounding. He denies all allegations but those allegations may have also played a role in him losing the election for being in the Senate.Although the discussion of ethics is highly subjective and even subject to variacion depending on the time period, a common theme in today’s political world is that of harassment. In aggregate our political leaders are ubiquitous for their crimes against humanity, even our current president, however that does not stop our nation for voting or supporting them. This was expressed in the election of Alabama, even though Moore was accused of rape he still acquired 49 percent of the votes. People we have sat in our living rooms and watched for years are now also apart of the accusations. People we have looked up to and had as our role models are now being accused of crimes that may or may not have happened. In the future ethics may change and things that are acceptable now may not be acceptable in later times. People in a position with power need to learn the importance of moderation and modesty. The worst can come out when you least expect it. Roy Moore, Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer, and Kevin spacey are all good examples of how power can hinder judgement.
