Essay: By: JustinGender equality in Canada has been very difficult, but has progressed a lot in the last century. Women have overcome many obstacles within society including; education, social aspects, and at work. Hopefully, at this pace, gender equality will be achieved in the next 10-20 years.Women have been making most progress in the workplace. Some time ago, women were told directly when they got a job that they would never advance in the job. In 1975, women were only making about 60% of a man’s salary. Then in 1991, women fought and that got brought up to 70%. Women are not in the lowest positions in the workforce, they are also in management positions that was always thought to be a man’s job. In 1993, a lot has happened for women because there was the first female prime minister in Canada. With all the progress that has been accomplished so far, who knows what women can achieve in the future. Women have escalated higher in the workplace because of the changes they have made with their education. More women have gone to post secondary education in the last 20 years, which allows them to get a higher paying jobs. In 1992 – 1993 women have shown to cover 52% of all full time undergraduates in canada. Education is always going to be the way to get further in life and living better. Other than advancing in the workplace and with their education, women have come a long way into social aspects too. “Women should stay at home and take care of the house and kids” has been a stereotype use throughout many decades. It’s now seen as a joke but it wasn’t always. Not long ago, it was a woman’s job to take care of the kids and house. While it was only seen as a man’s job to go make the money and be the “breadwinner” of the family. Much has changed from that, but that stereotype still continues in this generation because women are still seen as unable to compete with things that are more seen used by men. Like video games for example, many of the sexist remarks are used here for jokes and to use as insults to the female players. Mosts male players make comments about women in the kitchen and that they should be making them a sandwich, as if female players are not as good as males. Women have come a long way in such short time, but there is still a lot of change so that canada can achieve equality for both genders. The next few decades are estimated to be when we will be able to have equality and let go of stereotypes, to move on so that men and women can be equals.
