Discussion

After doing research of this proposal, I have realised that the knowledge gaps here besides the of lack of services but also how services provided can be coordinated and worked in tandem with psychological care healthcare services.

Many of the socially isolated elderly feel demoralised because they felt they are no longer useful and they will only cause problems to the society and people around them.

We need to ensure the elderly are in the positive frame of mind. It is easier that the elderly remains positive so that they can step out of social isolation to interact with other people.

First of all, we need to make sure that they feel a sense of worthiness within themselves and bring out the interest in life as well as show that they can still contribute to the society.

There can be events such as the carnival for the elderly to set up stalls based on their expertise such as cooking and making souvenirs, the funds earned would be collected as their treasury funds and can be used for further upgrading for these elderly). Firstly, this will make them feel that they are useful and can still contribute to the society. Secondly, they can depend on themselves for funds rather than having to wait for the government to provide subsidies for them. I think this programme is feasible to help the elderly. I realised that in the past such schemes were implemented in community centres but was not able to last as there is a lack of system for them to maintain the interest groups (IGs) of the elderly.

We will need to explore the reasons why the interest groups could not sustain, and resulted in the elderly going back to their old ways.

Secondly, although the government had done a great job in organising activities for the elderly, but what is lacking is the mental counselling for these elderly. Although there are health and dementia talks, but it is hardly enough. More inspiring and motivational talks are needed. The elderly would need both mental and physical support to get out of social isolation. The counselling agencies are not able to identify all the elderly. This is where the community centres and resident’s corner are able to provide the details and identify the elderly and channel them to these proper channels.

Despite having staff and volunteers, they still need to be trained and know how to handle the elderly and their needs. The events and activities that the elderly are interested can include Chinese opera or singing to attract them to get out of their house. At the same time, the volunteers would be able to interact with them and provide some counselling. If there are any active elderly who are jovial can help to form interest groups and recruit other elderly to take part. The nearby community centres can also sell health products at a cheaper rate, bring the elderly for tours or work with corporate companies on elderly support. The government has to make sure the activities always involved the elderly and most importantly it must involve the support from the family members or friends.
