By: have to pay for medical help?

By: William Jiang Today, I will not be talking about something new, this topic has been around for years, but not much action was taken. Let me ask you a question, Do you think people should I have to pay for medical help? My p.o.v is the same as hundreds and thousands of people. I don’t think that people need to pay in order to get help they need. The sentence, “People should pay for medical help” doesn’t sit right with many people. For instance, let’s say a homeless man broke his leg, now he can’t go anywhere to ask for money or look for a job. His leg might become infected or not grow back properly, thus giving him a defective leg. Without a functioning leg, the homeless man’s job opportunities will instantly be a lot smaller. Therefore, ruining his life since he won’t be able to progress and evolve through it. I’ve looked at a couple websites and I’ve seen that as visit to the ER or a hospital stay for an uninsured person can range from $900 to $2000! People on the streets have no hope paying for that. Sometimes, homeless people steal prescription drugs, not for pleasure, but to help themselves or someone close recover. Wouldn’t you do the same if your mother was sick but you weren’t able to pay for the medicine she needs to stay alive? Another thing, is that a rich person shouldn’t get better treatment/medical help compared to a poor guy just because of the amount of money he/she is able to spend. Both of those people are both human. They are equal, therefore they should be given an equal chance at surviving/living. Doctors shouldn’t treat rich patients with a lot more care while not doing the best they can with the not as fortunate. I did some research on this topic and discovered that medical bills is the number one reason of bankruptcy in the United States. Out of all the possible reasons in such a diverse country such as the U.S.A, medical expenses still come out on top. Many people protest for this cause, but there is a large sum of people who have many counters towards this campaign. For example, who will pay all the workers at the hospital. The government will have to increase the amount of taxes the middle class people will have to pay. Since majority of our country is part of middle class, there will be a lot of protest. That is one of the reasons why this campaign has not been brought to reality. A recent event that occured was the Las Vegas shooting, when a man open fired over a huge crowd from a hotel room. Over 58 people were shot fatally while another 546 were injured. Why do the victims and their families have to pay for medical expenses when they had no control over what happened. It’s not like they purposely injured themselves for amusement just so they could waste a hospital’s staffs time. People might say, “what about suicide?”, suicide is a completely different matter altogether.  The victims may need mental help, but if there is a cost, they will feel like they can’t afford it and might attempt to take their life again.I’ve come across a website by Valley Star, and a summary of all the answers to “Should there be free HealthCare” is…inconclusive. Most answers will either be yes or no, while other people put both. One comment by Alex J (a student who commented) states “I feel that health care should and should not be free. I think people who have something that is life threatening or really painful should have their care for free. People who have something that is not life threatening should have to pay. Check ups should be free so that people can prevent life threatening diseases.” I feel like that is a good compromise for people who want free medical expenses, and people who don’t want to pay extra taxes. This is why I want to advocate for the campaign of getting rid of expenses, towards any medical related issues.
