AICE GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES

January 9, 2018

To What Extent Does Overpopulation Affect the Environment?

In the last 12 years, one million people have been born. The
population of the entire world has increased drastically between 1999 and 2001.
Most developing countries represent the largest growth areas. According to Powerup.Arcadia, population growth and an
increase in energy have been directly correlated to each other. The global
issue at hand is simply that overpopulation in our world is leading to the
demise of our environment as we know it. At the end of the day, if we do not
take care of our Earth, it will send us off on our ways. Overpopulation
adversely affects the environment because too many people find themselves
scrapping in order to find sufficient amounts of resources to provide for their
respective families. With overpopulation, the leading problem is that we as
humans just do not realize just how badly we are hurting the Earth with the
rapid increase of lives inhabiting it. According to FastCompany.com, the UN predicts that the world population will
reach 9.6 billion by 2050 – which happens to be almost 3 billion more people
than we have on Earth at the moment right now. This means that all the
resources that we have available right now will soon be gone. All the water
will be drunk. All the food will be eaten, and all resources will be obliterated.
With overpopulation, there are many things that can easily lead to the demise
of humanity but in short, overpopulation is a path that many may or may not
believe will lead to misery. Important key terms to know are: overpopulation,
slums, and population. Overpopulation is the condition of being populated with
excessively huge numbers. Slums are overcrowded urban streets or districts
inhabited by extremely poor people. Population is all inhabitant in any
particular town, area, or – in our circumstance – world.

Some advocates for the ceasing of overpopulation are WOA!
(World Population Awareness) and Warren Buffett. WOA is a non-profit web
publication that hopes to inform people about overpopulation, unsustainability,
and overconsumption; with other impacts such as the killing of our natural
resources. Warren Buffet is one of the world’s richest men and he uses his
foundation, The Buffet Foundation, to give most of his earnings for the
foundation to be able to help control the population increase. The source EverythingConnects.org describes how the
effects of human overpopulation put the people of this world in a dark and grim
place. The thesis of this source’s argument is that human overpopulation is one
of the greatest environmental issues known to man. Main points that are present
are that overpopulation affects global warming, habitat loss, mass extinction,
and loss of fossil fuels. The reasons that overpopulation is so life-changing
is because with global warming, people around are participating in activities
that promote the decline of the environment such as: commuting and smoking. All
these gases are sent into the atmosphere. Habitat loss has a direct correlation
to overpopulation because as more people inhabit the Earth, the habitats of
animals must be taken over since there is not enough space to accommodate for
the staggering number of humans; this leads to mass extinction of species. The
loss of fossil fuels feeds into global warming because fossil fuels are
extracted from the Earth and used for vehicles and many other things. All these
problems stem from one root, and that root is overpopulation. The argument that
overpopulation is deteriorating the environment is extremely significant in
today’s world. In places like India, there are hordes of people commuting and
many more who find themselves sleeping on the sides of streets because there
just is not any space for them to stay. Strengths of this argument are that the
source EverythingConnects uses
statistics to back up facts. The strengths influence the quality of the
argument in a positive way because it supports the assertion that the
environment is harmed by overpopulation. The weaknesses of the arguments made
by the source are that it is from a website. Therefore, not everything that is
read may be true. The aspects of this source that decrease credibility are the
ideals that there are no counter points. This shows that the source is
unbalanced in provided information. This factor influences the source’s
argument in a negative way because it weakens the ultimate argument. Even with
this overpopulation greatly affects our environment.

Another advocate for the ending of overpopulation is
Partners in Population Development (PPD). It is an intergovernmental initiative
that focuses primarily on promoting the watching of overpopulation. The source Renewable Resources Coalition, describes
how overpopulation demands for more than the world can provide. Main points
present are that fresh water, food, and fossil fuels are being used at an
alarming rate.  The reasons this is so is
because that the world’s ecosystems are now changing more rapidly in the latter
half of the 20th century. Not only that but approximately
one-percent of the world’s freshwater is accessible which means that there is
no enough water to go around. This is something that must be addressed as soon
as possible or until someone tries to figure out how things work. In areas
where people cannot access freshwater, then they will eventually die and never
see water ever again. The argument that our resources are being used up is very
relevant in today’s world. When we find ourselves twenty or so years from now
searching for resources that are not there, only then will we realize what
mistakes we made and how we put ourselves in such a hole. Strengths of this
argument are that the origins of this argument are from an organization, which
means the information provided is from many different places around the world.
The weaknesses of the argument made by the source are that it is from a
worldwide source which ultimately means that many different perspectives are
given to form one overall perspective. The aspects of this source that decrease
credibility are the facts that this organization is not one many have heard
before which means that readers may be less inclined to take what they see as
true and valid information. The aspects of this source that decrease
credibility are the fact that this source is slightly general. The information
available does not have specific information.
There are some pieces of specific information in some places, but overall there
is not much available. This factor influences the source’s argument in a
negative way.

While many believe that overpopulation affects the
environment negatively with infrastructure and resources, others believe that
overpopulation helps military and the industry. The source Classroom talks about the advantages of overpopulation. The more
people there are, the more opportunities people have to give a hand in
industry. With company’s selling goods and services with high demand, many
workers can help to get the jobs done faster. For the military, its size will
increase and can lead to an extremely large country to take advantage of
smaller countries. The significance of this argument is that while there can be
many negatives available, there are always positive things. Strengths of this
argument is that there are proven facts that do back up the points made that
overpopulation can help societies. Weaknesses shown are that there are no
negatives present. This source speaks only about positive, so since it does so,
many readers can speculate that the information provided is not true. Compared
to the previous argument that overpopulation asks for more than the world can
handle, this argument does not correlate with the one right now. Overpopulation
can help make the world a better place in some circumstances and it can make
the world a better place. The problem is that it is not wise to make arguments
solely on two completely opposite ideas. With all this, many do believe that
overpopulation can do bad. All in all, overpopulation has its perks.

Personally, the issue of overpopulation destroying our world
is a problem that may never go away. With everything that happens in today’s
world, there will always be babies being born. We as humans will always want to
procreate and fill the Earth with mini-me. The Earth will eventually find
itself over populated until it will not be able to hold our species anymore. I
think about this issue the way I do because many people care about the Earth
enough to care for it. Eventually, much of the world we know, and love will be
used to its limits and we will either have to go with this wasteland or venture
off to other planets. With much of our technology being somewhat outdated, we
may not be able to leave Earth if the transportation is not available. The one
argument that swayed me was the argument of how overpopulation causes people to
ask for more than the Earth can provide. With fossil fuels, we are sucking them
from the crust of our Earth and using it to make gas. With our water, we go
into our ice caps and take the little amounts of freshwater available. These
actions lead to bigger problems such as global warming. With our land, we use
up so much rich soil by building houses and infrastructure on top of it, giving
us limited amounts of space to plant agriculture. Global warming is just one of
the many problems that overpopulation can cause since the water we take is from
places in which water is scarce. With overpopulation, the things that keep us
alive can and will soon be gone. More investigation must be done to make sure
that overpopulation does not mean the impending doom of our environment. This
is because the environment is what made the Earth what it is. With the Earth,
its biodiversity is second to none other planet in the universe as of right
now. If we waste what we have right now, we will miss it once it is gone. If we
use the Earth for our own benefits, its biodiversity will wither into nothing.
There must be a larger information pool because overpopulation is something
that every government in the world must take initiative and work together to
find a solution. No one country can do this on their own. I believe that
changes should be made to the way this issue is researched because the entire
world is not on the same page. Switzerland is not on the same page as Britain.
The potential impact of future studies can be game changing since many things
are not being done.
